Why I Do What I Do
My alarm goes off at 4:30 am. I get out of bed and the first thing I do is feed the rascals (my cats). I then sit down and start to meditate because I find this part of the morning has such a peaceful, spiritual and even magical feel that is just not found at any other time of the day. Then, it is time to get my body moving with an exercise routine. Afterwards I jump into the shower and eventually make my way into the kitchen to make my daily nutritional support breakfast smoothie. After I finish the last sip of my smoothie, I am ready to start my day teaching and coaching my clients how to optimize and transform their own health.
My day didn’t always start like this. As a physical therapist, I was surrounded by exercise equipment all day. Yet, I did not feel like exercising at work. I kept saying I will go to a gym after work so I can work out in peace. I had been an athlete my whole life but, like everyone else who transitions from being a kid into a working adult, I was just too tired to think about working out when I got home. My diet was also terrible. I began eating a lot of take out food, processed food and junk food because it was fast, easy and did not take a lot of time or thought to prepare. As the years went by I started to gain weight. I became unhappy and worried about my health. I realized that I had to get real about my habits. Not only with exercising but also with my nutrition.
Luckily, I have always gravitated towards personal growth books and seminars. In all of the books I have read, they always said if something is important enough you will somehow find a way to do it. Well, I finally realized the only way for me to make exercising a reality in my life was to get up early in the morning and do it before I went to work. This realization was like whoa! You have got to be kidding me! This was not a fun “aha” moment for me because at that point in my life I was not what you would call a “morning person” by any stretch of the imagination.
I will tell you, this is where the mind-body connection comes in with personal growth. It gave me a kick in the butt to finally take action. It got me to become curious and learn about clean eating and lab testing. It got me to realize how delicious clean eating can be and how important it is to know your vitamin, mineral and hormone levels especially when you reach mid-life. And more importantly, it got me out of bed at 4:30 am to start exercising.
